    Secret of Success

Ask any person who is successful in whatever he or she is doing what motivates him/her, and very likely the answer will be “goals”. Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that’s what your parents want, you may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it’s possible to succeed with someone else providing the motivation for you. (”If you graduate from college, I’ll give you a car!” or worse “If you don’t graduate from college, you won’t get a car.”) But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.

Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if you don’t have motivation, you won’t get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior. There it sits. This car has incredible potential. (Have you heard that before?) However, until a driver sits behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition, and cranks it up, the car doesn’t function. You guessed it; the KEY is MOTIVATION.

Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor leads to more interest and a greater desire to learn, creating an upward spiral of motivation toward a goal you have established.

So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.

Motivation And Personality – Know Your Type

Motivation is what makes leaders of ordinary men and personality plays a vital role. There are two types of personality that affects motivation:

    1. The type of person you are: Whether you have a overall strong personality or weak personality
    2. Our image perceived by another person: This deals with the mental aptitude and even the physical attributes.

If we look around us we will find many people who show a lack of motivation in life due to their subdued personality. The most affected are the people who feel that they have a personality that makes them feel like a social outcast or inferior in any way.

Some of the examples are that of obese people, people with low IQ, people suffering from depression and then there are people who can easily succumb to defeat in a situation, test, interview, examination and turned to committing suicide. These are actually the weaker aspects of personality. This is where motivation is required and needed; because it will getting worse.

Motivation can be derived from external sources like:
    1. News: Tom Whittaker used prosthetic legs to climb Mt. Everest. This incident provides motivation to a lot of people. Most people would thing, if he can do it then why can’t I? Of course, how much motivation you can derive from this event and whether it can bring a positive change or not will depend on your strong will. Positive motivation can help you to fight and win against some of the toughest enemies including physical problems like disability & blindness.
    2. Stories: We all grow up hearing stories. Some stories remain within us and we are able to relate to them whenever faced with a situation that demands the best or the worst from us. It is more of a psychological phenomenon. Stories about sacrifice, generosity, conquests, love, and death can bring tears to the eyes but also stir the soul and can become a source of motivation. This motivation will also help in carve a stronger personality.

Motivation can be derived from internal sources like an event. In one lifetime, a person can go through a multitude of events, which denotes the highs and lows in his or her life. How you take each situation and what you learn from it will determine whether you will be able to motivate yourself or not. There are two basic personality types. These are the people who have motivation yet the results are different:

    • Ambitious: These people have fire in their belly. They work relentlessly towards a single goal. Failure has a lot of value for them but at the same time they gain motivation from their failures and this motivation lays the cornerstone of their dreams and a future.

    • Casual: For them the moment is important but one low can bring them down. They have been through failures, but not learnt from them. They have the power within them to motivate themselves and reach a high in life but often falter on the way due to the “who cares” attitude.

    Reaching Your Goals

Lots of times I kind of guffaw at all this goal setting stuff. People ask, “What are your goals?” and it seems like whoever can list the most goals wins. All they are doing is telling all the things they want but they may never get there. What people really need to ask is, “What will you do to make sure you reach your goals?” Having these goals will help motivate you to do something.

Anyway, let me tell you what this goal business is all about. It’s actually pretty neat. There are three main steps to getting to where you want to go.

    First, there’s the dreams.

We do this all the time. However, sit down and write it out. By writing it you will get a better idea of where you really want to go. Think about how you would like to be. Imagine yourself at the end of the quarter or the end of the year or maybe in five years. What do you see? How do people see you? What are you doing? Are you successful? How do you know?

I’ll give you an example. This is my first year away at college and away from home. I hope my first year is a good one. I really want to have as good an experience at college as possible. I’d like to do pretty well with grades and I really hope my parents are proud of me. I’m going to really miss my little sister. I hope a year from now she and I have as good a relationship as we do now. In fact, I hope I still have a good relationship with all my high school friends. I also hope to go on a Spring break someplace.

Well, that’s kind of my dream. A dream is just that, it’s a vision of the future, of how you see yourself in the future. Once you know the direction you want to go than you can begin working on some goals.

    Second come the goals.

Goals are “wants”. So are dreams, but goals are more specific. Look back at your dreams. Start a list of specific things you want. Be really clear what you mean. If you want to be rich, tell how much money you need to be rich. If you want good grades, tell what you mean by “good” grades. In fact, the more specific the goal is, the easier it will be to get it. Now there are some rules for setting goals, and here they are.

    • Goals are always things you want. They are never things you don’t want.

Right: I want to stay at my current weight.
Wrong: I don’t want to gain weight.

    • Goals need to be specific. Tell exactly what you mean. Give numbers and times. Don’t use words like “lots” and “more”. Tell exactly what you want.
    • Be realistic. Ask yourself if it is possible. Yea, winning the lottery is possible but it’s not realistic.

I’ll give you my example. I look back at my dream and then start to really think about what I want.

    My Goals

    • I want a “A” in each of my classes.
    • I want to keep a good relationship with my sister.
    • I want to keep in touch with my friends.
    • I want to be involved at the U.

These are just a some of my goals but you get the idea.

    Third are the objectives.

This is the neat stuff. So far, all we have is a wish list. This is where the action takes place. Objectives are the things we do to get our wants. If I look forward to being independent in college (dream) and I want a car (goal) and I save money (objective) now I can buy a car and I’ve fulfilled my dream!!

Now again there are some rules. Keep in mind that objectives are things you will DO.

    • Objectives are very specific. They tell exactly what you will do and when you will do it.
    • When you think about what you will do, make a commitment to it. Objectives are written: I WILL … Don’t use words like “try or maybe” Very bad words to use. Very, very bad.
    • Be sure your objectives can be measured. Every day or every week I can say, “Did you do this?” and you answer with either a yes or a no. Don’t leave room for maybes.

OK time for more examples. I said I want a “B” in each class. My objectives are:

    • I will go to every class every day.
    • I will sit in the middle of the class.
    • I will re-read my notes from every class everyday.
    • I will begin every assignment the day it is given.

Goal: I want to be involved at the U.

    My objectives are:

    • I will meet my advisor in his/her office the 1st week of school.
    • I will join an intramural team.
    • I will join a student club or organization.

Well, you get the idea. Each of my objectives is specific and each one can be measured. If I do all my objectives there is a pretty good chance I will get what I want which will then mean I’ll fulfill my dream. When you do this, write it out; it will be easier for you.
